Following the Xinhai Revolution in 1911, the Republic of China was officially established on January 1, 1912, with Sun Yat-sen as its provisional president. This marked the end of over two thousand years of imperial rule in China and the beginning of a new republican era.

On April 15, 1912, the RMS Titanic, a British passenger liner, sank in the North Atlantic Ocean after hitting an iceberg on its maiden voyage from Southampton to New York City. The disaster resulted in the deaths of more than 1,500 passengers and crew and led to significant changes in maritime safety regulations.
